Apple Orchard FallGoing to the apple orchard is a necessary Fall activity.

Welcome to the Weekly Quick Hits Roundup!

If you’re new here, every week I write a weekly wrap-up of things that were going on here at Young Adult Money, a few personal updates/thoughts, and finally a few posts I read this week that I thought were worth sharing.

If you don’t already, please considering Following us on Twitter, Liking us on Facebook, and Following us on Pinterest.

We also have our giveaway roundup every Friday. This Friday there are 112 giveaways listed this week that end today (10/17) through next Thursday (10/23).
_____________________________________________________________________

Happy Friday everyone!

It’s been a great week this week, mainly because I have a one-day work week: today.

I took the first four days off this week. One of the biggest perks of my full-time job is that we get quite a few PTO days, even for people who haven’t worked for years and years. In fact, there is only one increase in PTO, which is an additional five days when you’ve been working for the company for five years.

During this time I did a surprisingly small amount of writing. I still essentially have my regular “work load” this weekend of two posts for Young Adult Money and one post for the FeeX blog.

I don’t know whether to be disappointed in myself for not getting as far ahead on writing or to be happy that I actually slept-in and relaxed. Pretty much every night I binge-watched The League on Netflix. Greanted, I did decide (on a whim) to write a 1,500 page post about whether Daily Fantasy sports is a good way to make money or not. Hopefully it can rank on search engines and I can at least get a few referrals through it.

Anyway I’m looking forward to a quiet weekend. My wife and I are doing the typical Minnesota thing to do in the Fall: going to the apple orchard. We’ll also pick up some pumpkins to carve. Last year I totally botched mine. It was the first year I tried to do a design instead of just carving a face. I’m buying two this year in case I botch it again.

Be sure to check out our giveaway roundup, it’s a good one this week with trips to Maui, Florida, and multiple $500+ cash giveaways, and over 100 giveaways in total.

Below are the posts we published this week:

  • On Monday I asked Do your Hobbies Become your Work?
  • On Tuesday I gave a Side Hustle Idea: Delivering with Deliv
  • On Wednesday Erin explained How to Discuss Finances Early On in a Relationship
  • On Thursday I asked Is Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) a Good Way to Make Money?

Posts of the Week:

As usual, here are 5 posts that I enjoyed this week from around the blogosphere.

Yay for apple and pumpkin picking! I think we’re going to do the same on Sunday. Your days off sound glorious!

  2. Holly at ClubThrifty says

Hope you have a great weekend!  There are a lot of orchards around here but I don’t think we’ll make it this year.  Too busy.  Our weekend plans include me helping a friend paint her house and working.

  3. blonde_finance says

Thank you so much for including my post this week!! Hubby and I are going away for a little anniversary getaway. I am looking forward to it. Our weekends have been so busy this month that we are not sure when we are going to fit it apple/pumpkin picking, but we always go so we have to find some time. Enjoy your Minnesota fall weekend!

  4. brokeandbeau says

Apple orchards are totally a thing here too.  Last weekend my bf and I went to upstate New York and took a hike through the changing woods, then went to an Oktoberfest festival, it was awesome.  This weekend is all about getting ahead on work- that is, if I don’t binge watch Netflix- which I have a tendency to do- including the league :)

  5. Beachbudget says

I thought I’d be writing more with being home but I didn’t…oh well. :) Enjoy the apple orchard. I went to a cider mill when I was home and it was SOOO good! The only time I like donuts.

  6. DebtDiscipline says

We make our annual trip to the pumpkin patch this past Monday. Enjoy the weekend!

  7. BudgetforMore says

Have fun at the orchard. We went last weekend and it was insanely busy. I couldn’t believe how many people were there. Good for you for taking time off and relaxing! That’s what PTO is for : )

  8. Eyesonthedollar says

One of my hidden talents is pumpkin carving. I’m not sure how it happened but probably started when I was asked to make a Snow White pumpkin. I’ve gone on to do just about all the Disney princesses since then. Thanks for the mention. Have fun at the orchard.

  9. Sarah Brooks says

Hi! Thank you so much for including my post this week!! That means a lot – I really appreciate it! Hope you and your wife have a great time at the apple orchard. We might be heading to Asheville, NC which is about two hours from us for a day trip. Hope you have a great weekend!!

  10. Erin @ Journey to Saving says

Many of the farms where I grew up were hours away, so we hardly ever went. I’d love to find an apple orchard around here, but this weekend we’re going away to Asheville, for my boyfriend’s birthday. I think it’s a good thing you took time off to recharge rather than work! I feel disappointed in myself if I do nothing on the weekends, but technically, that’s what they’re for. Have fun, and thanks for the mention!

  11. DC @ Young Adult Money says

Mrs. Frugalwoods Nice!  Yeah I’m looking forward to doing something “Fall-related” since the season seems to go by so quick.  I guess raking the massive amounts of leaves will also be fall-related…

  12. DC @ Young Adult Money says

Holly at ClubThrifty That’s nice of you helping your friend paint, but I hope you find some time to relax in the midst of all the busyness.

  13. DC @ Young Adult Money says

blonde_finance No problem!  Sounds like a great weekend.  I hope you and your husband enjoy your anniversary getaway!

  14. DC @ Young Adult Money says

brokeandbeau Sounds like a great weekend and a great way to get away from the city for a while.  Haha I totally botched my writing plan during my PTO because of the league.  I could have finished one article a night – solid articles – in the time I was binging.  I love that show tho.  It gets better as the seasons go on, which isn’t typical for a TV show.

  15. DC @ Young Adult Money says

Beachbudget Oh that sounds awesome!  I love donuts, though, so I’m sure I would have loved those.  Hope you have a great weekend!

  16. DC @ Young Adult Money says

DebtDiscipline Nice!  Hope you enjoy your weekend as well!

  17. DC @ Young Adult Money says

BudgetforMore We go to a really busy pumpkin patch in the east suburbs.  Saturdays are always insane there.  Thanks for validating my relaxing (laziness)!

  18. DC @ Young Adult Money says

Eyesonthedollar I think you need to post some pics this year of the pumpkins you carve!  I’m not expecting much out of mine this year.  If I don’t completely butcher the carving I will be happy.

  19. DC @ Young Adult Money says

Sarah Brooks Hey no problem!  It was a good post and I even ended up applying for a job listing on freelance writing gigs. I didn’t hear back, but I’m well aware it’s a numbers game.  Sounds like a fun day trip, hope you enjoy your weekend!

  20. DC @ Young Adult Money says

Erin @ Journey to Saving Hmmm maybe you should meet up with Sarah (commenter below?) Looks like you guys are going to the same city!  What are the odds.  I get disappointed at myself almost every weekend for not getting more done haha.  I hope you have a fun weekend celebrating your boyfriend’s birthday!

  21. ShannonRyan says

At my old company, they were very generous with their PTO too and I loved it! :) It sounds like you had a relaxing week and sometimes those are the very best vacations. We’re all so busy so just being able to relax is a real blessing. Apple picking sounds like fun! The girls are getting anxious to carve their pumpkins too. It’s fun but messy! Have a great weekend!

  22. PoorStudent says

Ahh I love going to apple orchards! I just basically love Fall-related activities because they’re so much fun! It’s really nice that you get a lot of PTO, it’s about time for the companies to realize that a lot of working hours don’t always mean an increase in productivity. In some countries in Europe they even have a five-week annual leave!

  23. DC @ Young Adult Money says

ShannonRyan It’s crazy how entertaining pumpkins can be for kids.  They are pretty cheap, too, so that’s always a plus.  Hope you have a great weekend too!

  24. DC @ Young Adult Money says

PoorStudent The apple orchard was absolutely packed today, but it was still fun to go.  Got some apple doughnuts and some of the best kettle corn I’ve ever had.  I don’t like the way Europe “mandates” paid leave, but I think PTO is really undervalued here in the United States.
