Welcome to the Weekly Quick Hits Roundup!

If you’re new here, every week I write a weekly wrap-up of things that were going on here at Young Adult Money, a few personal updates/thoughts, and finally a few posts I read this week that I thought were worth sharing.

If you don’t already, please considering Following us on Twitter, Liking us on Facebook, and Following us on Pinterest.

We also have our giveaway roundup every Friday. This Friday there are 94 giveaways listed this week that end today (5/16) through next Thursday (5/22).

Happy Friday everyone!

I had my first interview in years this week. It was a bit unexpected but I ran into a friend on Sunday who works at the same company and he knew of an open position that lined up with what I’m looking for. One thing led to another and before I knew it I was sitting down interviewing.

This leads me to a question: is there anything more awkward than telling your manager you are interviewing with another part of the company?

My manager took it well and we had sort of discussed the fact that there wouldn’t be room for advancement within our group. At the same time, it never is a comfortable conversation.

Here’s a question for you to ponder this Friday: When was the last time you interviewed?

Below are the posts we published this week:

  • On Monday I explained How Mental Accounting Can Motivate You To Make More Money.
  • On Tuesday Sally shared 5 Steps to Save Money on Groceries.
  • On Wednesday Cat shared 4 Lessons I’m Teaching My Kids About Money.
  • On Thursday Victoria shared 5 Tips for Selling on eBay

Posts of the Week:

As usual, here are five posts from around the blogosphere that I enjoyed:

  • Josh from CNA Finance shared a great guide in Financial Hardship Programs – The Ultimate Guide
  • Holly from Club Thrifty told us How to See Italy For Free
  • Dave from The New York Budget discussed The Many Definitions of Saving
  • E.M. from Journey to Saving asked When Is It Worthwhile To Save Money?
  • Stefanie from The Broke and the Beautiful Life explained What Speaking Ukrainian Taught Me About Money

____________

How was your week? Any plans for the weekend? When was the last time you interviewed for a job?

Happy Friday!  Thanks for the mention!!!!!!!  The last time I interviewed for a job was 7 or 8 years ago.  I hope I never have to again =)

  2. brokeandbeau says

Have you ever seen that friends episode where Rachel runs into her boss while interviewing for another company?  Totally awkward and hilarious.  Thanks for the shout out DC!  Have a great weekend!

  3. FrugalRules says

Very cool on the interview! The last time I interviewed for a job was about three years ago and hope I never have to again. :) Our anniversary is on Monday, so we’re going out to celebrate tomorrow night so that should be fun. Have a great weekend DC!

  4. DC @ Young Adult Money says

Holly at ClubThrifty No problem Holly!  Hope you have a great time in Vegas!

  5. DC @ Young Adult Money says

brokeandbeau Oh I don’t remember that episode but I’m sure I’ve seen it, sounds hilarious!  Hope you have a great weekend too!

  6. DC @ Young Adult Money says

FrugalRules Yeah interviewing can be brutal, but I can see why it’s necessary. Even with extensive interviewing sometimes bad workers are brought on-board and once they’re in it can be hard to get rid of them.  Hope you have a great weekend too!

  7. Beachbudget says

Hope it went well and you get the job if that’s what you want. Did you have to tell your manager? I guess it’s the right thing to do if word ever got back, they might think you were going behind their back. I’m playing beach vball, catching up on life stuff, and doing “extra” work for Extreme Makeover Weight Loss. ha ha. Random right?

  8. Andrew LivingRichCheaply says

Good luck with the interview.  I know it can sometimes be awkward…but it can be a good thing.  Sometimes you are not valued as much until they think they might lose you.  Plus, since there isn’t much room to advance…you gotta do what’s best for you and your career.

  9. The New York Budget says

Good luck with the interview! It’s definitely an awkward conversation, but at the same time, having lived through 3 massive layoffs at various companies (I survived 2 out of 3), I have really internalized the “it’s not personal, it’s business” mantra. Just as a company will let you go if it makes business sense to them, so do you need to make a move if it makes sense to you.

I get frustrated by managers who take that personally. About a year ago, I had someone under me quit and move to another company. I was happy for her. I congratulated her and told her she was making the right move (better position, better salary, etc).

  10. JourneytoSaving says

I can’t imagine how awkward that was! I’m glad he was understanding at least. Good luck with everything! I haven’t been on an interview in about a year and a half. I should brush up on that, just in case.

Thank you for the mention! This weekend we’re hoping to get our licenses here and go to a few parks to enjoy the weather. Have a good one!

  11. Joshua Rodriguez says

Hey DC, my week has been amazing! My business partner just landed a couple big sales that increased our monthly income by over $3,000 as a business!!! As far as plans for the weekend, with money comes work, I’ve got to get these guys going. The last time I interviewed for a job was probably 4 years ago. I quit that job in January and haven’t looked back. Good luck on the department change…those are never fun conversations. Well, that is unless you absolutely hate your boss. Also, thanks for including my post, I’m glad you enjoyed it!

  12. DC @ Young Adult Money says

Beachbudget It’s definitely what I want!  It’s recommended that you tell your manager before interviewing for internal jobs.  That’s the thing, I didn’t want to go behind their back.  Haha that is random but I’m glad you got some extra work!

  13. DC @ Young Adult Money says

Andrew LivingRichCheaply Definitely.  I even have mentioned in the past my desire to advance and the prospects were dim where I’m at, mainly because there simply is not openings.  My manager has been understanding and it’s nice having the freedom to apply to internal jobs that I’m interested now.

  14. DC @ Young Adult Money says

The New York Budget It does seem like sometimes it’s only a one way street when it comes to “it’s not personal, it’s just business.”  With that being said, if you aren’t in a binding contract to your employer they shouldn’t expect blind allegiance when there are other opportunities out there.  I’m lucky that I’m at one of the biggest companies in the US so there’s many areas that I can move to internally.

    No problem on the mention!

  15. DC @ Young Adult Money says

JourneytoSaving Haha it wasn’t my favorite conversation.  Took me 30 minutes to get the courage to ask him to talk for a few minutes (it’s rarely a “good” thing when I say that haha so I knew he’d know something’s up).
Hope you have a great weekend!

  16. ShannonRyan says

My old company was actually really good about employees moving around to different department, which really helped lower the awkwardness. It was somewhat expected. Although it is still hard to tell your boss that you are interviewing and as a former boss it was never easy to hear that a talented member of your team might need to be replaced. Good luck! For me, it was about 9 months ago when other Broker Dealers started recruiting me. :) Have a great weekend, DC!

  17. blonde_finance says

Congrats on the interview DC!!! I am sure that it was a littler awkward for you to have that conversation with your boss, but if you have the opportunity to expand your career, they should be supportive. Plus, it wasn’t like you were actively looking for something different or even looking to leave the company. Have a great weekend!

  18. DC @ Young Adult Money says

blonde_finance Definitely!  It wasn’t too bad of a conversation and could have been far worse.  Hope you have a great weekend as well!

  19. mycareercrusade says

As always, great wrap-up.. Cheers for tweeting out my article too DC, appreciate your continued support :)
Well I have actually mentioned this to a boss of mine about 2 years ago, I’d already secured the position and it really came as a bit of a shock to her, as I was not unhappy.. Let us know how you go, all the best and how did you go with the interview?

  20. DC @ Young Adult Money says

mycareercrusade  It went well talking to my manager, and I had hinted at my desire to move up a while back.  The interview went well!  I had 2 last week, actually, and will continue to keep my eyes out for new positions.

  21. mycareercrusade says

DC @ Young Adult Money mycareercrusade  Good luck Dave :), sounds like you are making progress though

  22. No Nonsense Landlord says

I always look at internal interviews as a “Informational Interview”.  No formal commitments on either side.  It’s not as though you are leaving for good, and it gets you more knowledge of the company.

Then, if you like it, you can apply.  Of course, by that time, it’s a done deal.

Most managers hate to see you go, but they know it’s great for you, and the company.

  23. debt debs says

For the most part, I have self initiated all of my new jobs either within the company or leaving a former company and I agree, it can be awkward.  It is especially draining when they are trying to talk you into staying, but you’ve made your mind up.  You don’t want to insult them by quickly cutting them off, so I try to interject and focus on the positive things I learned while in the position and add, hey, I’m not going far.  ;-)
