This week my wife’s grandfather passed away. It wasn’t unexpected as he was in hospice care, but it still doesn’t make it any easier for anyone who was close to him. I never knew him very well, because I haven’t been in the family that long and Alzheimer’s had already started to affect him quite a bit when I first met him. From everything I’ve heard and know of him, though, he was a great man who is in a much better place.

Tomorrow is our garage sale, which I’ve written a few posts about including my Downloadable Garage Sale To-Do List. Unfortunately the weather forecast has been getting worse and worse…but still 40% or less chance of rain (as opposed to 70%+). It’s been a ton of work so I really hope that it ends up being worth our time. I plan on writing a post next week with how we did. One final question on this: Is $500 too ambitious of a goal??

Has anyone else seen the show White Collar? I started it last weekend when I was recovering from surgery and I’m way into it. The show is essentially about a former white collar criminal working for the FBI instead of serving out the rest of his four year term. The funny thing about the show is that it makes you want to learn about wine and art; the show makes them seem super interesting even though I have never been interested in either! I’m also not that interested in “crime” shows where each episode they go through a case, but this show is different as the crimes are not violent crimes for the most part.

Also a big announcement for the blog – we have our first ever staff writer! I’m super excited (and blessed) to have the resources to bring on a writer and I hope you all will stop by and welcome them when their first post goes live on June 10th.

I’m always interested to hear: What are you up to this weekend?

On to the giveaways!

Sorry to hear about your grandpa in law passing. My grandmother had Alzeimer too and it was hard to see her not being herself in the end. Hope you make lots of $$$ in the sale!

    • DC @ Young Adult Money says

RFIndependence Yeah Alzheimer’s is not a good thing…praying fora  cure some day.  Thanks, I just hope the weather cooperates, I think it will largely hinge on that.

  2. christineslittleblog says

Sorry to hear about you and your wife’s loss. Good luck with the garage sale! I don’t think $500 is too lofty of a goal if you’re doing it right! AND congrats on hiring a staff writer! I look forward to reading their posts!

    • DC @ Young Adult Money says

christineslittleblogThanks I am really excited for the staff writer as well, I think it will be good to have an additional “voice” on here that has unique perspectives.  I still think my $500 is too ambitious because we don’t have any big furniture pieces or anything along those lines that could bring in a lot of money, but who knows??? We have so much clothes maybe a few people will come and buy up a whole bunch of them.

  3. FrugalRules says

Sorry to hear about your wife’s grandfather. My Stepdad’s father had Alzheimer’s and it was not fun to see. Congrats on the staff writer! I hope to be bumping mine up to once a week soon as I just need more time and believe the site can benefit from it. Good luck with the garage sale, we’re starting to list stuff on Craigslist and looks like we may have our first few sales locked up.  :)

    • DC @ Young Adult Money says

FrugalRulesVery cool about getting stuff out on Craigslist!  I have yet to put anythign up but seriously have a small pile of things that need to be added.  Might give Ebay a try as well since I haven’t ever sold anything on there and I’m intrigued at how easy the process is.

  4. SenseofCents says

Sorry about your wife’s grandfather :( I hope you all are doing well.
Congrats on the staff writer !

    • DC @ Young Adult Money says

      SenseofCents Thanks Michelle!

  5. moneymatters says

Sorry to hear about your wife’s grandfather, losing a loved one is always hard, even when they’re dealing with something as tough as Alzheimer’s.
Congrats on the staff writer, sounds like you’re big time now! :)
$500 may be a tough goal depending on what you’re selling. We made about $350/400 last time we had a sale, but we had a few bigger pieces that we were selling that made up a majority of the total.   With smaller items it might be tough. Good luck, I hope you reach the goal!

    • DC @ Young Adult Money says

moneymatters I’m not sure about big time, but thanks ;)  Yeah we don’t have the big pieces which will really limit how much we make.  Praying for weather to cooperate.

  6. TacklingOurDebt says

Sorry to hear about your wife’s grandfather. It is always hard to deal with it no matter what the circumstances are.
Good luck with your garage sale, and hope it stays dry long enough to make $500 bucks.

    • DC @ Young Adult Money says

TacklingOurDebt Haha I’m not so sure about the $500 anymore, but we’ll see!

  7. TheHeavyPurse says

I’m sorry to hear about your wife’s grandfather passing.  It’s never easy to lose someone. I am so impressed by all the giveaways you find every week, DC. Thank you! Good luck on tomorrow’s garage sale. Fingers crossed for good weather and lots of sales!

    • DC @ Young Adult Money says

TheHeavyPurse Thanks!  Sure hoping the weather cooperates tomorrow.

  8. StudentDebtSurvivor says

So sorry to hear about your wife’s grandfather. Even when we know someone isn’t well it doesn’t make the passing any easier. I hope you guys are doing OK. Hope you were able to get the sale it look forward to “meeting” your new staff writer.

    • DC @ Young Adult Money says

StudentDebtSurvivor We are doing well, the funeral is today and the wake was very nice yesterday. I think you might already know my staff writer but she’s very solid so I’m excited for her to start posting!
