The Maldives ParadiseToday’s pic of the week is a pic of The Maldives aka Paradise

Welcome to the Weekly Quick Hits Roundup!

If you’re new here, every week I write a weekly wrap-up of things that were going on here at Young Adult Money, a few personal updates/thoughts, and finally a few posts I read this week that I thought were worth sharing.

If you don’t already, please considering Following us on Twitter, Liking us on Facebook, and Following us on Pinterest.

We also have our giveaway roundup every Friday. This Friday there are 90 giveaways listed this week that end today (9/5) through next Thursday (9/11).

Happy Friday everyone!

My first question is this: why do short work weeks sometimes feel just as long – or longer – than regular weeks?

Labor day marked the end of Summer and the beginning of football season here in the good old USA. I read a post this week about how football can affect your life and how to make sure it doesn’t take away from your goals. It got me thinking about how much time I put towards consuming NFL and college football.

This weekend I am heading to the Gophers game with my wife. We both like cheering on the Gophers and I’ve been a bit more into college football the past few years. We also had our fantasy football draft and I almost always watch the Viking’s game on Sunday. It takes up a lot of time!

As if I needed to take on anything else, I also started playing “Daily Fantasy Football” where you put a new lineup in each week. I deposited some money on a DFS (daily fantasy sports) site and entered a few “contests.” To win at DFS you really need to have some idea of what is going on in the NFL on a weekly basis, otherwise you might as well not play.

I became interested in it after reading an article in the Wall Street Journal about an MBA student who built an algorithm that helps him pick the optimal lineup. He’s made hundreds of thousands on DFS all thanks to his algorithm. I plan on trying to do something similar and see where it takes me.

In conclusion, I’m probably going to spend more time and energy on football this year, but it has potential to improve my data analytic skills and my bank account. If it doesn’t I’ll probably slowly lose interest.

Below are the posts we published this week:

  • On Monday I asked Is Public Transit Worth the Hassle?.
  • On Tuesday I explained How to Make Sure You Have Enough Money for Health Care Bills.
  • On Wednesday Cat asked How Far Would You Go to Pay Off Debt?

Posts of the Week:

As usual, here are 5 posts that I enjoyed this week from around the blogosphere.

Want to be featured? I pick blogs that comment on the site regularly, so stop by and leave a comment!

I’m sure you will have a good weekend with your wife! I’m planning to take my family to a newly open restaurant in our city after going to church.

  2. indebtedmom says

The football thing sounds interesting. I hope you can make a killing at it or at least realize it’s not going anywhere before you waste too much time. But hopefully it’s the former!
Thanks for the shout out :-)

  3. Mrs. Frugalwoods says

Can’t say I’m much of a football fan, but I do appreciate how very fall and American it feels! Have fun at the game! We’re hoping the weather will be clear enough to go hiking this weekend. And, we’re dog sitting for our friend’s mini-Aussie :)

  4. blonde_finance says

We are excited about the start of the football season in our home. My hubby and I both lived in Atlanta for a few years and SEC football was fun to follow while living there because Atlanta is the biggest city in the Southeast so you had a great representation of every school and all of the rivalries. In our home, if it’s a New York team, we root for the Giants, but overall we are a Steelers home since my hubby, his parents and grandparents are all from Pittsburgh originally. Have a great weekend!

  5. RetiredBy40 says

Thanks DC!  I’m not really a football fan, but in honors of footballentines’s day, 1800 flowers was offering free roses, just pay shipping, so my hubby send me some!  I guess I’m now a football fan!

  6. Beachbudget says

I don’t watch or particularly like football, but I appreciate that other people do, and I love the “season” of football. But growing up I was a diehard U of M fan, mainly because my mom was and so my family just sort of adopted that mentality. But as soon as I moved away rom Detroit I hardly watched football after that. But I am going to a Michigan game when I go home in Oct with my mom just because i know that’s how she likes to spend her time. I’m sure I will enjoy myself anyway. :) Thanks for the blog mention!

  7. Practical Cents says

I’m not a football fan but I do enjoy the fall season, though this week it felt more like the dog days of August here in NJ.  Enjoy your weekend and thanks for the mention! :)

  8. JourneytoSaving says

I’m not a fan of football so I tune all of it out =). Hopefully your experiment goes well and you end up with some new skills and money! Short work weeks usually feel pretty short to me; I felt a day behind all week. Thanks for the mention, and enjoy the game!

  9. DC @ Young Adult Money says

Clarisse @ Make Money Your Way Sounds like a great weekend, Clarisse!  I’m definitely looking forward to the weekend.

  10. DC @ Young Adult Money says

indebtedmom Haha I’m really hoping it’s not a waste of time.  I hope even if it’s more a “break-even” exercise that I gain a lot of big data analytic experience.  Hope you have a great weekend!

  11. DC @ Young Adult Money says

Mrs. Frugalwoods Sounds like a relaxing weekend!  Hope the weather is nice!

  12. DC @ Young Adult Money says

blonde_finance Best of luck to your football teams!  Atlanta is a hotbed for football, that’s for sure.  Hope you have a great weekend!

  13. DC @ Young Adult Money says

RetiredBy40 Wow I did not know about the free rose deal, I totally would have gone for that.  Hope you have a great weekend!

  14. DC @ Young Adult Money says

Beachbudget Football isn’t everyone’s thing.  I used to be really into baseball growing up because my parents love it, but I really don’t follow it much at all anymore.  To each their own.  No problem on the mention!

  15. DC @ Young Adult Money says

Practical Cents No problem on the mention!  I hope you have a great weekend as well (and that the weather cools down a bit for you).

  16. DC @ Young Adult Money says

JourneytoSaving Thanks, I hope the expirement goes well too!  It would be great to gain some more advanced data analysis/DB skills, and of course if I can make money while I’m at it that would be ideal

  17. hwincome says

Oh boy if you can come up with strategy to help people with football and analytics each week you have a new website to create with a huge audience out there.

  18. ShannonRyan says

I love 3-day weekends but it does make the rest of the week seem both too long and too short! I’m not a big football fan but Chris enjoys it.  I have no doubt you’ll create some killer algorithm and take over the Fantasy Football world too. :) Have a great weekend and enjoy your football games!

  19. Eyesonthedollar says

I love that you’ve turned football watching into a potential side hustle! I could care less about college football, but I will watch the Broncos. Peyton is almost my age, so you gotta pull for the old guys.

  20. DC @ Young Adult Money says

hwincome I’m not sure if it makes sense to start a website, though.  If you have an algorithm and strategy that works I think it makes more sense to keep it to yourself and just cash in (huge) over time.

  21. DC @ Young Adult Money says

ShannonRyan Thanks for the vote of confidence, Shannon!  Seriously appreciated it!  I hope you have a great weekend too!

  22. DC @ Young Adult Money says

Eyesonthedollar Peyton still has it!  Last season he was absolutely ridiculous on the football field.  I’m still in shock at the numbers he was able to put up.

  23. MoneyMiniBlog says

Interesting idea to turn fantasy football into actual income.  It’s like professional poker players.  I’m sure it can be done.

  24. DC @ Young Adult Money says

MoneyMiniBlog There already are full-time DFS players, so it definitely is doable.  I’d love to make a side income from it, though, not play full-time.

  25. mycareercrusade says

I find that shorter weeks tend to go quicker for me! That’s a great pic you’ve got there DC, is that one you took yourself?
Love how you’re explaining about the football fantasy league improving your analytical skills :), good save there haha

  26. DC @ Young Adult Money says

mycareercrusade I wish it was one I took myself!  I have never been to the Maldives.  Fantasy football is intense and I was crunching numbers quite a bit this weekend, but yeah the improved analytic skills is definitely an excuse to spend more time on it ;)

  27. mycareercrusade says

Oh well, sure you’ll get there one of these days :).. got to love football though :P, although I’m more of a fan of the aussie variety haha
