West Virginia in Fall
West Virginia. You may wonder why, of all places, West Virginia is on my bucket list of places to visit. Well, my wife went there on a mission trip in college and fell in love with it. Ever since then it’s been on my list of places to visit. I haven’t really been to the mountains that often – Minnesota is pretty much flat.

Welcome to the Weekly Quick Hits Roundup! Every week I write a weekly wrap-up of things that were going on here at Young Adult Money, a few personal updates/thoughts, and finally a few posts I read this week that I thought were worth sharing.

We also have our giveaway roundup every Friday. This Friday there are over 100 giveaways listed that end today (10/4) through next Thursday (10/10).

Below are the posts from this week:

  • On Monday I shared 5 Ways to Make Money Blogging. Blogging is a lot of work, but there are definitely ways to make money doing it (and not just from Adsense!)
  • On Tuesday our staff writer Sally shared My Habitual Spending and Learning to Curb It. I like the approach she took and actually have taken the same approach myself.
  • On Wednesday our staff writer Cat shared My Plan for Tackling 300k of Student Loan Debt. It’s a lot of debt, but seems fairly typical for med students these days.
  • On Thursday I wrote about a great new website in Collegefeed Review – Connecting Students and Grads to Careers.

Update Time

  • New Staff Writer – Thanks everyone who stopped by and commented on Sally’s first post on Tuesday. She’ll be posting every Tuesday from here on out.

Ironically I had to shift her post next week to Monday because of a giveaway that starts on Tuesday

  • Speaking of Giveaways – We haven’t co-hosted or hosted a giveaway for a while now, but we have three lined up for October! We are co-hosting two giveaways and also hosting one exclusive to our website. While I’m excited about the two I’m co-hosting, I am even more excited about the one I am exclusively hosting because it’s sponsored by a huge company that everyone will recognize.
  • Workout Goal – I set a goal of running 3 miles a day, four days a week, for three weeks. This is my second week and I already feel like I’m getting in better shape. Now if only I could force myself to get more than six hours of sleep a night…
  • Pinterest – I’ve actually been doing a decent job of spending some time on Pinterest since setting up an account last week. If you follow our boards I’ll give you a follow back – always looking for more stuff to pin ;)
  • Weekend – This weekend I am going out for my Father-in-law’s 50th bday, playing poker with some buddies, and of course blogging! Should be a fun weekend and I definitely am looking forward to it after a long week at work.

Posts of the Week:

  • Michelle from Making Sense of Cents shared Things That I Do To Save Money.
  • Anne from Unique Gifter shared Engagement Gift Idea – Family Tree Flashcards.
  • Kim from Eyes on the Dollar asked When Is It OK To Buy Cheap Glasses?.
  • Lisa from Lisa vs. the Loans shared The Future You.
  • CF from Outlier Model tells us about their new $300 Rice Cooker.

What are your plans this weekend? Can you believe it’s already October? Anything you want to accomplish before the end of the year?

About the best thing West Virginia has going for it is white water rafting at the New River Gorge and Gauley River. Depending on the time of year you can hit some great class III-V rapids through some parts. Great fun if you are into that type of thing.

    • DC @ Young Adult Money says

Brian @ Luke1428 Thanks for the tip!  I have gone whitewater rafting and would definitely consider going again.  I’ll have to keep that in mind when I finally make it to West Virginia.

  2. Matt @ Mom and Dad Money says

I drove through West Virginia several years back on my way from North Carolina to Pittsburgh and it’s one of the most beautiful areas I’ve ever seen. My Honda Civic with about 95 HP wasn’t a huge fan of all the mountains, but the landscape is pretty breathtaking. And I will also say that I have never, ever seen bigger roadkill than I did in West Virginia. Just jaw-droppingly big.

    • DC @ Young Adult Money says

Matt @ Mom and Dad Money I wish you had a pic of the roadkill!  I definitely want to drive through the mountains someday – preferably in Fall weather when the leaves are changing.

  3. Money Life and More says

I’m probably going to be dealing with Karen, the wonderful tropical storm. Oh well, part of living in paradise I suppose.

    • DC @ Young Adult Money says

Money Life and More Ah sorry to hear that.  I didn’t even know about that tropical storm, probably because I’m about as far inland as you can get haha.

  4. FrugalRules says

You really need to stop posting those pics DC. ;) I lived in Virginia as a kid and went to WVA quite a bit and there are some really beautiful parts to the state. As for the weekend, we’re working in the redesign and getting together with some friends tomorrow.  Oh, just followed you on Pinterest. I am finally getting started on there somewhat and having my VA work on it.

    • DC @ Young Adult Money says

FrugalRules Haha I love picking out pics for Fridays!  Best of luck on the redesign, I plan on doing some work on my design during FINCON when I’m sitting at home instead of hanging out with everyone.  Pinterest is so fun I can’t believe you outsourced it ;)

  5. Holly at ClubThrifty says

My plan this weekend: packing!  Hope you have a good one!

    • DC @ Young Adult Money says

Holly at ClubThrifty I hope you get a lot of packing done and have some time to relax!  I can’t imagine packing with kids running around haha

  6. SenseofCents says

Thank you so much for the mention. Have an awesome weekend!

    • DC @ Young Adult Money says

SenseofCents Hey no problem Michelle and I hope you have a great weekend as well!

  7. moneystepper says

I’m planning an epic bike ride in the sun tomorrow with my fiancée. Can’t wait! Have a great weekend!

    • DC @ Young Adult Money says

moneystepper Nice! I hope the ride goes well!

  8. ayoungpro says

My plan for the weekend is to finish all our our adoption application process and be approved for the waiting list by next week. My plan for the rest of the year is to save up enough money to be able to afford an adoption. :)

    • DC @ Young Adult Money says

ayoungpro That’s so awesome you are adopting!  Looking forward to seeing some posts about it.

  9. KyleJames1 says

You should do a post on the benefits of Pinterest – I’d be totally interested into the nitty gritty of how it works and how you can maximize it to build brand/blog awareness.
Have a great Weekend! I’m shooting guns and launching rockets on Sunday, woot woot

    • DC @ Young Adult Money says

KyleJames1 That’s a great idea!  I really should spend some more time on there and make sure I know all the ins and outs before writing the post, though.
Sounds like you have a great weekend planned!

  10. Ugifter says

Thanks so much for including me!  I’m looking forward to the giveaway :-)

    • DC @ Young Adult Money says

Ugifter No problem!  I’m glad you are excited about the giveaway, I’m so pumped to be have three this month.

  11. OutlierModel says

Thanks a lot for including our post this week! This weekend I’m heading to a hockey game – it must be fall!

    • DC @ Young Adult Money says

OutlierModel Haha yes it must be.  Football, Hockey, and Soccer = Fall.

  12. MicrosMissions says

MN has some bluffs by the Mississippi river.  Although those really aren’t going to compare to the Appalachian mountain range.

    • DC @ Young Adult Money says

MicrosMissions I’ve been to those bluffs a number of times, definitely some nice scenery.  I’ve only driven through the Appalachian mountain range a couple times in my life and it’s been well over a decade since the last time.  I can’t wait to make it back out there.

  13. DonebyForty says

We just hiked in WV recently and it’s a beautiful part of our country. If you get a chance to stop in Harper’s Ferry, it’s a cool spot to see if you like historical towns.

  14. Beachbudget says

West Virginia is so beautiful in the fall! The whole east coast really. Hope you get to see that sometime!

  15. LisaVsTheLoans says

Thanks for including me, DC! Can’t wait for your giveaways :) Great job on the running, I’m slowly getting there. Right now my priority is sleeping more!
